Excerpt from An Economic History of the United StatesThe rapid march of economic progress, the normal industrial changes of a decade, and the taking of a new census seemed to make a further revision of this work desirable. But more than any of these factors, the revolutionary changes which accompanied and followed the World War made necessary the addition of such new material. Advantage has been taken of the opportunity thus afforded to make a thorough revision of the whole book. It has accordingly been entirely rewritten; the introductory chapter in the old editions has been omitted; a few others have been combined; while new chapters on the Mining Industries have been added, together with a new Part covering the events of the war period and bringing the book down to date.In revising the work the author has endeavored to take advantage of various suggestions which have been made by teachers who have made class use of it. Greater emphasis has been placed upon the relation of cause and effect in economic development; it is meant to be more than a mere narrative of events.
